Martin A. McKee is a Scottish writer of horror and dark fiction, fascinated by obsession, discomfort and the macabre hiding beneath ordinary life.
Born in Rutherglen and raised on the South Side of Glasgow, Martin studied pharmacy before going on to study medicine at the University of Glasgow.
He now works as a doctor in Scotland.
Perhaps inevitably, his fiction has developed a certain interest in bodies, compulsions, uncomfortable situations and the many ways in which apparently ordinary things can become deeply unpleasant.
His debut collection, The Peeler and Other Grotesqueries, brings together stories of dark fixations, peculiar encounters and everyday situations that take decidedly wrong turns.
The title story, “The Peeler,” was a finalist in The Ghosties Horror Short Story Prize 2025.
When he isn’t writing horrible things about otherwise innocent household objects, he can usually be found reading, cooking, baking or spending time with his family.
About the Writing
I’m drawn less to monsters hiding under the bed than to the moment when something familiar starts to feel wrong.
An obsession that has gone slightly too far. A conversation that becomes uncomfortable. A perfectly ordinary object that suddenly acquires a different significance.
Those small disturbances interest me.
And occasionally they involve worms.
The Peeler and Other Grotesqueries is my first collection. I hope you’ll find something inside it that stays with you.
Preferably when you’re trying to sleep.
